Service dogs - Battersea Dogs & Cats Home

Battersea has a longstanding history of supplying dogs to the services. In the First World War, an Airedale Terrier called Jack served in the trenches alongside British troops. He was a messenger dog and spent his time relaying important messages across the battlefield. 

Today, Battersea dogs are serving with the Police Service, the UK border agency, with security firms and livestock farmers.

Dogs who show potential for the services are put through their paces by our Service Dogs Manager at our Old Windsor centre. There are lots of possible roles available.
 

• Some dogs may have the potential to work alongside the Police or security firms where they will help to apprehend criminals, search for stolen property or help to find missing people. 
• Dogs who show particular skills for finding concealed tennis balls can go on to work as explosive or drug detection dogs. In their training, the tennis ball is gradually replaced with the item that the dog would need to find. 
• Some dog breeds are particularly suited to service roles. For example, Border Collies are taken to a local livestock owner to test their ability to herd sheep and some Terriers would be best suited to a rural or farm home.
• If we think that a dog could be successful in a working environment, we contact an appropriate service dog organisation so they can come and meet their potential new recruit themselves to find out more.
• The training with the service organisation can take around four months. During this time, and after the training is completed, we work closely with the service dog organisation to ensure that kenneling and training standards are high and that the dog is enjoying the experience. We also carry out health checks, vaccinations and microchipping.
