At Standish Dog Trainer we offer classes that will socialise your dog and train obedience & companion dog skills that are relevant to the world that we are asking our dogs to live in. We have a structured timetable with three levels of class that start by teaching foundation skills and then allow progression, adding more advanced training as your dog learns and becomes more confident and focused. All of our classes now support the use of clickers; research has proved that training new behaviours is in some cases over a third quicker using a clicker, facilitating better learning, reducing frustration and reducing training time needed. Twinkle Stars is our foundation class. This will suit puppies from 12 weeks old and also older dogs that have not done any basic training. In this class we teach dogs how to settle and focus on their owners. We teach responsible dog ownership, we encourage socialisation to each other, new people and novel experiences. We teach good food manners, loose lead walking, basic recall and basic positions like sit and down. We also encourage controlled play and grooming and handling skills. Twinkle Stars is currently available at our Standish and Wigan training venues. Check dates for each venue in the table below.
Super Stars is the class that follows Twinkle Stars. In this class we teach new skills that are a little more advanced and we improve on the basic skills that have be learned in Twinkle Stars and work towards Bronze Award for the Kenne; Club Good Citizen Dog Scheme. We add distractions to the loose lead walking; we improve the recall training and add an emergency stop command. We teach a stay command, door manners and improve impulse control, focus on owner whilst out on walks and much more. This class is suitable for all dogs that have completed our Twinkle Stars foundation course and will add valuable, easy to learn life skills. The idea here is to deal with adolescence, since many dogs lose focus and concentration during this time, we want to support your training and help you and your dog all the way to adulthood. We take the training out of the hall and outside into real life situations to help proof the work that we have started inside. We work on car manners, roadside control and focus on walking through the village safely. This class supports the Good Citizen Dog Scheme Bronze Award and we will offer testing for those who would like to work towards this, although it is not essential if you prefer not to test.
Shooting Stars is our exciting new class! This class is going to include a huge variety of fun dog training, it will incorporate Tricks & Treats, teaching you how to use a clicker and then teach a range of fun tricks and skills, it will also incorporate the schedule for all of the Good Citizen Dog Scheme Awards, allowing you to progress right up to Gold level and finally it will incorporate KC Rally Obedience so that you can learn a new sport and can compete if you choose too. If you enjoy training and having a fun hobby with your dog, this is the class for you. Once you have joined the Shooting Stars Club, you can stay as long as you are enjoying yourselves! Im hoping that our Shooting Stars Club will support our display team and you will have the chance to showcase your skills at local shows and carnivals. The class runs on a Saturday lunch time. The class runs in 5 week terms, you will need a clicker as part of the class and de do ask you to bring your settle mats so that your dog has chance for a rest if they need it.
All of our courses incorporate training for the Kennel Club Good Citizen Dog Scheme, puppy foundation, bronze, silver and gold levels. With patience, hard work and determination you can work towards these fantastic awards with us at Standish Dog Trainer. Assessments are held regularly throughout the year.
You will find that classes with Standish Dog Trainer are focused around fun and positive reinforcement. We use play, praise, food and toys to train our dogs.
You will receive a training booklet to accompany your course, written by Jo Pay. This booklet covers useful information about training methods, house-training dogs chewing, mouthing, jumping up, grooming, fun ideas for games, information about the laws concerning dog ownership as well as all of the training that you will cover in your course.
Venues: Methodist Church Hall, High Street, Standish and Wigan District Scout HQ, Greenhough Street, Wigan. We also take the opportunity to train outside when the British weather permits!
If you have a dog that barks at other dogs, classes may not be appropriate for your dog, in this case we would be very happy to help you with 1-2-1 training.
Unfortunately dogs that have fear or aggression issues with other dogs or people are not invited onto our training courses. Please contact Jo to discuss and arrange a private consultation.
Duration: All courses are 5 weeks in length and consist of 5 x 60-minute sessions, running most Saturdays at 10am, 11am & 12.15pm and at 7pm & 8pm on most Tuesday evenings.
Please note that all classes for April are full, we are taking bookings now for May and June 2016.
