You may not feel the need to attend dog training classes because you feel that you are able to train your dog yourself. Whilst this view point may be valid it is important to remember that dog training methods are evolving all the time and its a good idea to keep yourself updated with modern kind fair and effective training techniques. As well as this it can be very beneficial to get your dog used to obeying you whilst it is in the presence of other dogs. This can be practiced in the safety of a dog training club environment around a variety of different breed types and sizes.
However, not all dog training clubs are the same, some are excellent and some are not.
It is imperative that you attend a training session without your dog so that you can assess the quality of the training.
Things to look out for are as follows:
- Does the trainer allow or recommend the use of choke chains in their classes? Choke chains are very outdated when it comes to dog training and they have been proven to cause skeletal and soft tissue damage.
- Does the trainer allow, recommend or use startle equipment such as cans of stones to shake or water pistols in their classes? There is never a need for this type of equipment in a dog training class, training should be fun and should not involve such levels of punishment.
- Does the trainer use any kind of force to achieve basic results? For example, does the trainer encourage owners to push down a dogs bottom in order to get the dog to sit or does the trainer encourage owners to pop and jerk the lead in order to get the dog to walk to heel? This approach to training is very outdated and deemed cruel and unnecessary to all modern trainers.
- Is the atmosphere loud and chaotic? If so this type of environment is not ideal when it comes to a dog trying to learn something new.
Positive things to look out for are as follows:
- Does the trainer encourage the use of treats during training? Learning via positive reinforcement is the best approach to dog training.
- Has the dog trainer got a number of assistants to help in the class? It is very important that everyone gets one to one help if it is required.
- Does the trainer put a limit on the number of dogs per class? Try to avoid classes that contain over eight dogs, it is impossible for a good trainer to keep an eye on everyones progress and advise accordingly.
- Speak to other owners attending the class. Word of mouth is one of the best recommendations that a trainer could have.
- Does the class seem happy and relaxed? Training should always be fun!
A good place to start looking for a reputable dog training club is either via your local animal rescue shelter or website.
