My great pyrenees mix, Larry, and I just completed Petco's Adult Level One course and thought I would share a little about the training course for anyone that is on the fence about signing up for it. For starters, I have read a ton of really bad reviews about the petco training class, and was totally baffled about what some people wrote because my experience was nothing of the sort.
The trainer was extremely nice and wasted no time with helping my correct Larry's problems. Larry is a very big, very destructive, very high strung dog... The training class was a last resort because my husband was ready to get rid of him. The very first class Pauline, the trainer, started helping us with Larry's barking and gave me so many helpful tips for practicing at home. There were 3 other dogs in our class and she was really good at taking turns with everyone. Typically, we would start out in the small training area, which was difficult for me because Larry wanted to lunge and bark at every other dog most of the time, but Pauline would help me keep him under control while everyone discussed what they had worked on and what we were going to practice today. Then after a bit of practice, we would venture out into the store and walk up and down the aisles and practice while using the entire store. The first couple times I wished we could be somewhere free of distractions, but later I realized how much it helped Larry to learn new things WHILE being tempted with distractions.
Anyways, 6 weeks later, here is what Larry has learned and what we still need to work on.
"Sit", "Down", "Stand", "Look", "Wait", "Stay", "Leave It", walking on a loose leash, not jumping on people that come pet him, and we have made quite a bit of progress with his barking and destructive behavior at home.
We still need work with distractions. Larry is so extremely easily distracted I feel like I am teaching algebra to a 3 year old. And socializing with other dogs. While he has come along ways here, he has so far to go. He acts so aggresively towards all dogs he doesn't know, it really scares people, and I can barely control him now that he's up to 90 lbs(and still growing).
I wanted to get started on the Level 2 class, but Pauline recommended that I re-do a level one class with Larry, because he needs the extra socialization before we move into Level 2. Since I have already paid for level one, she said I can retake it as many times as I would like for free.
If you want your dog to suceed though, you need to practice like crazy at home. I have a 7 month old baby, so I have my hands full, but I tried to spend 5-10 minutes, 3-4 times a day practicing with Larry and although we don't have all the distractions here at home, he seemed to accell much faster than the other dogs in our class, despite him being the biggest, most obnoxious, retard there. lol.
Hope this helps some of you, I highly recommend this class for anyone on the verge of giving up on their dog. Best $110 bucks I have ever spent.
